XCM Xbox 360 Case Shells Reviewed

hsdemonz 29 Dec 2006 | : unrelentless meaningless drivel

Small post here.. so don’t get excited. We managed to finally get my Review up and posted on the news page..

XCM 360 FULL CASE REVIEW

It was a long time coming, but given the detail, depth, and reasons I think you’ll understand why XS doesn’t rush a review like this to get it posted.

We’ll let other bad review sites rush to post glowing reviews of products their hosts sell.

We won’t rush a review. We also won’t be swayed by sponsors.. XS isn’t here to sell product. If a product is bad.. you’ll know about it.

… without all of the hard work and dedication of the staff listed above, Xbox-Scene and PS3Scene would not be the greatest forum on the net for what we do. They keep this ship steering in the right direction.

I’d also like to thank the membership who daily teach me new things about this great scene we love. Without you, there would be no need for us. :)

XS and PS3Scene is ever growing, and as such I am looking for new staff for the PS3 Forums and for the 360 forums. anyone interested in becoming a moderator should have the following qualifications: be active, be polite, and be helpful.

In January I will be adding ALOT of new staff, so if you want to get noticed, the time is now.

Peace.

Wireless Controllers and Piss Breaks

hsdemonz 21 Dec 2006 | : unrelentless meaningless drivel

Ok.

Yes.. I want to discuss this. I’m not sure why, but I feel it goes entirely undiscussed. (maybe for good reason.. like having good taste.. etc..)

We’ve had wireless controllers for many, many years now. Some are Bluetooth.. others using more archiac means. Regardless of what you have and what you use sooner or later nature calls.

When nature calls, at times I find myself having to make a decision mid game.. to put the controller down.. or to take it on a trip to the washroom with me. Yes.. I said with me.

I used to think I was a freak. (ok.. I am a freak.. but I think for different reasons..) I know I’m not the only one who has done this act. I’ll be online.. playing a game.. and sometimes hear “bawooooshh” as a toilet clearly flushes.

Personally.. I turn off my mic when I want to stay connected while doing number 1 or number 2. Nay… i’ve never taken the wireless when I know number 2 is in the shoot.

When we first got a hold of the early wireless headset all those years ago, I have vivid memories of hearing No Remorse walk outside 30 feet for a smoke break.. fetching a bottle of Rolling Rock. I have other memories of endelss hours sitting in lobbies while hearing LeftyFB curse as he messed up an install and went back over his work to correct them.

Some nights.. we’d not play at all.. which would frustrate the living fuck out of some of the wanderers that would slip in and out of our game lobbies sometimes.

The wireless headset has become such an integrated part of online life. Whether it’s playing a game, or sitting back and talking trash about some loser on IRC.

Back to the freak show.. anyways.. I’ll be playing.. or chatting in the lobby of a game with the crew when of course I feel the urge to visit the porcelain throne. If I know it’s just a quick piss break.. I won’t say a word and I’ll take the headset with me. I turn off the mic.. head down the hall, and enter the washroom.

This is where things get interesting.

Ok.. so with the 360 wireless controller in hand.. and the headset perched on my head I needed to figure out the mechanic of this process. It didn’t take long for me to figure out I can handle all the chores one handed.

Right hand hold the controller.. and if necessary toggles the mic on and off. (yes.. I’ve committed that sin as well.. maintaining a conversation mid-piss) Left hand on the pants.. the belt.. and the manhood when necessary. Piss, 2 shakes.. and then it’s back on with the pants. (one handed)

I then toss the controller under one arm.. and give the hands the best I can do in 5 seconds under a tap with some liquid sanitizing soap. Usually.. I can pull this off and no one even notices I’m gone. I’m not sure if I’m proud of that.. or dismayed.

I’ve never managed to take the controller/headset for a number 2. I don’t think LIVE.. or the game lobbies are ready to hear me squeeze a log out. there are some things people don’t need to hear crammed into their left or right ear from a cheap ass headset.
I’m not sure how bad this had gotten with the online community. I know the crew I hang with have no real issues taking their wireless controllers/headset for long strolls around their play.. to the fridge.. to the back yard.. and yes.. some to the washroom as well.

I’m not sure what made me want to write out the washroom exploits of my 360 headset. Could be the bitchfest I made in my last post.. and how the biggest hangup I have with the XFPS 360 is the lack of headset support.

Bah.. just chock it up to unrelentless mindless drivel I guess.

XFPS 360 exposed as expensive garbage

hsdemonz 20 Dec 2006 | : unrelentless meaningless drivel

Ever since this product was mentioned on XS a few weeks back I’ve been very apprehensive about it. The potential for a Fully Programmable keyboard and mouse Adapter for the xbox 360 Game console is an exciting prospect.

Then, reality set in. This isn’t a fully programmable device at all.

I finally had a chance to sit down and read the manual for this new product, and it answered many questions. The answers, reinforced most of my ideas and fears and loathing about this product.

xfps_360_manual_s200.jpg

The Manual dissected.

Page 3..
Connect the Xbox 360 Control pad to the XPFS 360’s USB port 1 or 2; then connect the keyboard and mouse to their appropriate ports. Next, plug the XFPS 360 into your Xbox 360 console. Wait until the *console Connection Display* lights up. that indicates that your keyboard and mouse connection is complete and is running normal.

So.. that single paragraph answer one of the most important questions.. how did they get by the security. They didn’t. They did realize they can either act as a pass through (most likely) or can temporarily capture the security key/handshake. Regardless.. if that works.. it’s something that we can use in other projects.

What is plainly apparent now though.. is that EVERY TIME we boot our 360 with one of these things we will need to at least initially have a 360 WIRED controller plugged in. I sure hope their website and their packaging for this device will include a notice warning buyers they will also need to own a WIRED controller.. or be prepared to shel out another 40-60 US for a proper WIRED controller.

Way to go.

Sure.. we can remove it.. bloody hell though.. this device was supposed to give us the PC gaming experience. Not leave us with a bitter taste in our mouth as we either go out and buy a WIRED controller.. (assuming you don’t own one) and then have to make sure it’s at least plugged in momentarily during EACH ANY EVERY TIME WE TURN THE 360 ON!

Moving on.. more on page 3…

If your Keyboard and mouse are both USB, then do the following: connect the Xbox 360 control pad to your XFPS 360 and your XFPS 360 to the xbox 360. Once the *Console Connection display* lights up, you can disconnect the Xbox 360 control pad from the USB port and connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the USB ports. If connection is unsuccessful, please repeat the above steps.

Wow. I guess they found out during their testing and quality control phase before production that this device is not perfect.. and that people will have problems getting to boot and do the necessary handshake to get the device working properly. So much so, that at least they were wise enough to warn the buyer (after they bought it mind you.. not before) that they will have issues at times getting this device to boot.. and that they can rest assured that they will psend at least some time plugging and unplugging controllers and devices until this all works. Joy Joy.. and you’ll get to do it all again the next time you boot.

Moving on.. Page 5…

-Permanent settings that cannot be programmed are as follows:
Left Analogue Stick on the Xbox 360 control pad ( Left, right, up, down ) is mapped to W, A, S, D on the keyboard.

As a left handed person.. I don’t think I’ve played any PC game using the WASD combo in the last 5 years as my gaming direction keys. Even in games that might not directly supporting key remapping.. I’ve used any number of tools to remap those to the arrow keys.. or other specialized keys on special keyboards.

Come to think of it.. most Right Handed people I play with remap those as well.

The idea that with a programmable device.. we can’t program such an important part of it.. really adds to the ongoing frustration and angst I feel towards this lackluster product.

Why can’t we program this simple key combo???

So.. after reading the manual.. I’m left with more issues and reasons for people to NOT BUY this product.

  • NO HEADSET SUPPORT
  • NO SPEED ADJUSTMENTS ON ANYTHING.
  • ANNOYING PLAYSTATION SUPPORT AND A LACK OF XBOX 1 SUPPORT
  • WASD COMBO NOT PROGRAMMABLE. SORRY LEFT HANDED PEOPLE, THIS DEVICE ISN’T FOR YOU.
  • RIGHT ANALOGUE OF A CONTROLLER IS FORCED/MAPPED TO UP,DOWN,LEFT,RIGHT WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.
  • ANNOYING TO HAVE TO CONNECT A WIRED CONTROLLER AT BOOT TIME.
  • COST ALMOST DOUBLE WHAT THE ORIGINAL XFPS COST 2 YEARS AGO, AND WITH CRAZY SHIPPING COSTS. TOTAL IS OVER 120$ US. (god help you after customs.. exchange)
  • BUYERS AREN”T WARNED AHEAD OF TIME THAT THEY WILL NEED TO OWN A WIRED COTROLLER TO MAKE ANY USE OF THIS DEVICE. (so people with a premium xbox and wireless controllers.. this device is useless to you unless you shell out even MORE money for a WIRED controller)

I don’t think I missed anything.

I do look forward to reviewing the unit though once it’s available, and comparing it to the original versions.
